Of Forked Tongues and Tears for Fears

Originally this piece was part of my screen printed series “4 Slashes”, which was inspired by the FlashFace tool. I rearranged a selection of prominent facial components to create a phantom sketch or modern Frankenstein, a cross-sectional study of society in 2020. For the digital remix of this screenprint, I added running binary text and other digital elements, that symbolize the utmost polarization, in which public opinion becomes the battleground. This is where false prophets and sad clowns meet.

As a reference to Andy Warhol’s series of “Mao” screen prints, I chose to screen print a random individual of the new Chinese “white collar” working class.
As the next step, I took the physical screen printed art and gave it a digital remix, partially by adding layers and fragments generated in the screen production process. I also distorted the portrait by slicing the image in the eye area and placed a display of random 0’s and 1’s in the gap.
I did this in an effort to restore anonymity for the depicted individual, as since January 2020 Mainland China has implemented a social credit score system which is tracking the behavior of citizens through facial recognition enabled surveillance technologies.

For this play on “image vs letter”, I again remixed one of my screen prints.
As written language being fundamental for more complex civilizations, there is a socio-cultural divide between cultures, those that developed their written language based on images/pictograms (i.e. Chinese) and those that developed signs/letters to express phonetics.
The frame I added to represent the Renaissance, a time where mankind overcame belief systems and laid the foundations for humanism and science.
Rainbow Descending a Staircase

The staircase in my studio did cast a shadow on one of my canvases and i took a photograph of it. I converted it to a BW bitmap, which I separated into 2 layers and put a layer of the light spectrum in between, a prism. Finally, I animated a cartoon version of a rainbow, running down the shadow of the stairs.
Degen’s Diner

To document this time I created the “Degen’s Diner”.
